Pre-tour extension to Harbin’s Snow and Ice Lantern Festival

Rather than simply endure below-zero temperatures for half of the year, the residents of Harbin celebrate them with annual snow and ice festivals! The focal point of the snow festival is an amazing array of snow sculptures that have been traditional here since Manchu times, and every year, they seem to get more elaborate and spectacular. The Ice Lantern Festival takes place nearby, and its exhibits are primarily buildings and structures made entirely from ice and colourfully illuminated at night. One year the Great Wall sculpture was actually a giant ice-slide, there are ships, temples and towers made entirely from ice, replicas of Beijing’s Forbidden City and Summer Palace, the Louvre, cathedrals and many other world-famous buildings – even the footpaths are made of ice and brightly lit from below. A real winter wonderland!
